Schengen Visa Insurance Pricing Report 2026
Which Schengen visa insurance provider is cheapest? SafetyWing has the lowest verified flat daily rate at $1.95/day. EKTA's Start plan can look cheaper on paper ($0.99-$1.37/day) but carries a 25% deductible and only $50,000 of aggregate cover, so it isn't directly comparable to the other four providers' deductible-free tiers.
This page collects the pricing and coverage facts we've independently verified for the five Schengen visa insurance providers we compare, each sourced from a live quote, a primary policy document, or a Trustpilot listing, with the date we checked it. It's the raw dataset behind our comparison tables, published separately so journalists, researchers, and other travel sites can cite specific figures directly. Every number links back to how we got it; nothing here is estimated or scraped from a third party.
Base pricing per day
These are the lowest verified per-day rates at each provider's entry tier, before age and duration adjustments. They aren't directly comparable line-for-line: coverage limits, deductibles, and what's included vary by provider, which is exactly why the tables below break each of those out separately.
| Provider | Base rate | Entry-tier cover | Deductible |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing | $1.95/day | $250,000 max limit/period | None |
| EKTA (Start) | $0.99–$1.37/day | $50,000 (aggregate), $3,000 per-occurrence cap | 25% |
| Heymondo | ~$1.85–$3.00/day (varies by plan) | $250,000–$500,000 by tier | Not disclosed at general-contract level |
| Europ Assistance (Schengen) | €30 flat / 14 days (~€2.14/day) | €30,000 | None |
| AXA Schengen | €4.90/day, dropping to ~€1.05/day for 105–180-day stays | €30,000 (up to €150,000 on higher tiers) | None on standard tier |

Deductibles and per-claim sub-limits
A headline coverage figure only tells part of the story. EKTA's tiers advertise up to $500,000 of aggregate cover, but every single covered event across all three tiers is capped at a $3,000 per-occurrence sub-limit, confirmed directly in EKTA's Schedule of Benefits. That means a $500,000 Max+ policyholder still can't recover more than $3,000 for any one illness or injury claim. EKTA also applies a steep age-60+ override that replaces the tier limit entirely: a 65-70-year-old is capped at $9,000 with a 20% deductible regardless of which tier they purchased, dropping as low as $2,000 with an 80% deductible past age 100.
Europ Assistance and SafetyWing have no deductible clause anywhere in their primary policy documents, confirmed by reading both in full. Heymondo's General Conditions state the deductible is set in plan-specific "Particular Conditions" issued at purchase, not disclosed in the general contract itself, so it can't be stated as a fixed number here.
Visa-refusal refund policy
| Provider | Refunds on visa refusal? | What's refunded |
|---|---|---|
| AXA Schengen | Yes, automatic | Full premium |
| Europ Assistance | Yes, automatic (subject to conditions) | Full premium, if trip hasn't started and no claim was filed |
| EKTA | Optional paid add-on only | The visa application fee itself, not the insurance premium |
| Heymondo | No | Not present in General Conditions (read in full) |
| SafetyWing | No | Not present in Description of Coverage (read in full) |

Underwriter and regulatory jurisdiction
Not all five providers are EU-regulated, and this is disclosed unevenly across the industry. AXA Schengen and Europ Assistance S.A. (Irish Branch) are both EU-regulated entities. EKTA's underwriter, Auras Insurance LLC, is licensed in Anjouan, Union of Comoros; the policy explicitly states it "does not voluntarily submit to the regulatory oversight, consumer protection regimes, or jurisdiction of the European Union," with disputes going to binding arbitration under Comoros law. SafetyWing's underwriter, SafetyWing Insurance I.I., is domiciled in Puerto Rico and regulated by Puerto Rico's Commissioner of Insurance, not an EU body. Neither arrangement is improper or hidden, but it's a material difference worth knowing before you buy.

How we source this data
Every figure on this page comes from one of three places: a live quote we ran ourselves on the provider's own site, a primary policy document (IPID, General Conditions, or Terms & Conditions) read in full rather than summarized from a marketing page, or a direct Trustpilot listing. We don't publish a number without a source and a date attached, and we flag it explicitly when a figure is unconfirmed rather than guess. Full detail on our process is on the methodology page.
Questions people ask about this data
Which provider is cheapest per day? SafetyWing, at a verified $1.95/day. EKTA's Start plan can look cheaper on paper but carries a 25% deductible and a $50,000 aggregate limit, so it isn't a like-for-like comparison.
Which providers have no deductible? Europ Assistance and SafetyWing, confirmed by reading both providers' full policy documents. AXA Schengen also runs deductible-free on its standard tier.
Which providers refund the premium automatically on visa refusal? AXA Schengen and Europ Assistance. EKTA only refunds the visa fee itself, as a paid add-on; Heymondo and SafetyWing have no visa-refusal clause at all.
Are all five providers EU-regulated? No. AXA Schengen and Europ Assistance are. EKTA (Comoros) and SafetyWing (Puerto Rico) are not.
Which provider has the best Trustpilot score? Heymondo and SafetyWing are tied at 4.3, both with roughly 4,000 reviews. EKTA has no rated profile.
Does a higher coverage limit always mean better protection? Not necessarily — check per-claim sub-limits, not just the aggregate figure. EKTA's $3,000 per-occurrence cap applies regardless of tier.
