AURAS Schengen insurance review

Quick answer

Is AURAS a good Schengen visa insurance? It is one of the cheapest: a flat $1.50 a day (about €1.28) at any trip length, the same price from age 18 to 65, with a 35,000 EUR plan that clears the €30,000 minimum. The trade-offs are real. It is a Comoros-registered, non-EU-regulated insurer (the same company behind EKTA), any single medical event is capped at $3,000 on every tier, and its independent Trustpilot score is 3.2 out of 5, mostly over denied or slow claims. It suits budget travelers who mainly need the certificate; read the policy PDF before you submit it.

AURAS prices below almost everything else we track, and that is the whole appeal. The policy wording has caveats that don't show up in the headline numbers, so here is what we measured and what to weigh before choosing it on price alone.

What it actually is

AURAS is the direct-to-consumer brand of IC "Auras Insurance" LLC, a company registered on the island of Anjouan in the Union of Comoros (licence L16330/AI). It sells one policy in four sizes through an online calculator, bills in US dollars, and emails the policy within minutes of payment. The calculator also offers euro-denominated sums insured (35,000, 100,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000 EUR) at the same price as the dollar equivalents.

The number in each tier's name is the policy's total amount, not the medical cover. The schedule of benefits in the policy wording shows what each tier actually pays for medical expenses:

Tier (sum insured)Medical expensesPrice per day (adult 18-65)Body repatriationTransport to home countryEmergency ambulance
35,000$35,000$1.50$3,000$500$100
100,000$50,000$2.00$10,000$3,000$500
500,000$150,000$3.00$70,000$5,000$20,000
1,000,000$250,000$5.00$200,000$30,000$25,000

Source: AURAS policy wording, Section I schedule of benefits (downloaded 2026-10-02) · Prices measured in AURAS's Schengen calculator, 2026-10-02

That makes the "$1,000,000" plan a $250,000-medical plan, and the entry $35,000 plan sits just under the €30,000 Schengen minimum at current exchange rates. For a visa application, choose the 35,000 EUR option, which AURAS prices the same as the dollar plan.

Price

AURAS charges the same rate for every day of the trip. We measured the entry plan for one adult in AURAS's own calculator (Europe (Schengen), Calm trip type):

Trip lengthTotal pricePer day
7 days$10.50$1.50
14 days$21.00$1.50
30 days$45.00$1.50
90 days$135.00$1.50

Source: live quotes in AURAS's calculator · Checked 2026-10-02 · One adult aged 18-65, 35,000 plan, deductible $100, includes a 1GB 7-day eSIM

The price depends on age, and it works in the opposite direction to most insurers: it is flat from 18 to 65, then rises, and children cost more than adults. For a 90-day trip on the entry plan (adult price $135):

Where it wins

Price. $1.50 a day for an adult with no longer-trip discount needed: a 30-day trip costs $45. Between 40 and 65 that is far below SafetyWing, whose rates for those ages run from $3.67 to $7.82 a day.

A euro plan that meets the minimum. The 35,000 EUR option clears the €30,000 Article 15 floor, at the same price as the dollar plan.

More ways to pay. AURAS accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and PayPal. That helps applicants whose cards are declined by foreign merchants.

Reachable support. It lists 24/7 phone lines with local numbers in the US, UK, UAE, India, the Philippines, Japan and other countries, plus WhatsApp and Telegram.

Buying after you have left home. The policy has an "Already traveling" option that starts cover 48 hours after payment, a shorter wait than EKTA's four days.

It sells to older travelers. Unlike SafetyWing, which stops at 69, AURAS insures travelers into their eighties, at a surcharge.

Payment methods and support lines: auras.insure, checked 2026-10-02 · "Already traveling" rule: policy wording, Section VI clause 11

Where it falls short

A nationality exclusion with an undefined "high-risk" list. Section VI, clause 6(o) of the wording excludes insured events where the traveler is a citizen of a state "designated as high-risk or sanctioned" under the company's internal underwriting guidelines, or subject to EU, UK, US or UN sanctions. The guidelines are not published, so a citizen of a country the insurer treats as high-risk (Russia, Belarus and Iran are the obvious candidates) can have a claim refused, even after the certificate was issued. We have not verified which nationalities AURAS accepts at checkout; check the wording against your own passport before buying.

$3,000 cap on any single event. Section VI of the policy wording limits coverage for any single covered event to USD 3,000 per insured person, on every tier. The 35k, 100k, 500k and 1M figures describe the total across the whole trip, not what one hospital stay would pay. EKTA's policy carries the same cap.

Not EU-regulated, and the same company as EKTA. AURAS is regulated by the Anjouan Offshore Finance Authority. The policy is governed by Comoros law, disputes go to binding arbitration in Mutsamudu, the insured waives any class action, and the wording says the product is "not marketed or tailored to U.S. or EU residents". That suits most visa applicants, who are neither, but it is a different risk profile from AXA or Europ Assistance.

Claims need pre-approval. You must notify the insurer within 48 hours of an event, and agree any outpatient or inpatient care with it within 24 hours and before treatment. If the cost will exceed $1,000 the insurer must consent in writing first, unless you are physically unable to communicate. Late notice or treatment without consent can void reimbursement.

A 3.2 out of 5 Trustpilot score. AURAS holds 3.2 ("Average") from 169 reviews on Trustpilot. Customers praise the fast purchase and responsive support; the recurring complaints are denied or very slow claims, the 48-hour rule and a policy PDF they say was not sent at purchase. AURAS's own pages show other review counts and a higher rating, which we have not independently verified, so we use the Trustpilot figure.

Broad exclusions. Pre-existing conditions (anything that needed a GP visit, medication or tests in the previous 24 months) are excluded except life-threatening emergencies. The wording also excludes non-life-threatening flare-ups of chronic disease, diabetes, cancer, neurological and mental illness, autoimmune disease and routine pregnancy care.

Visa-refusal protection is unclear. The roughly $49 add-on reimburses the embassy fee on an official refusal letter, not your premium, and we could not find it in the policy wording. A plain cancellation is free only within 14 days of purchase and before the trip starts; after that it costs a 40% fee, and nothing is refundable once the policy has begun.

We have not verified the certificate wording. Consulates look for explicit €30,000 cover, Schengen-wide validity and repatriation on the certificate. We did not buy a policy to inspect AURAS's certificate. The entry plan covers repatriation of remains up to $3,000 and transport to your home country up to $500, so read the PDF yourself before submitting it.

Children and 66-plus cost more. See the age table above.

Who it's actually for

Budget travelers aged roughly 30 to 65. If your priority is the lowest total price and you only need a certificate for the visa file, AURAS's flat $1.50 a day is hard to beat.

Applicants who need other ways to pay or local-number support. UnionPay and PayPal, plus phone lines in the country you are applying from, can matter more than a few euros.

Not for anyone who may need a large claim paid smoothly. The $3,000 per-event cap, the pre-approval rules and the Trustpilot complaints point the same way. If a serious claim worries you, look at an EU-regulated insurer such as AXA or Europ Assistance, or at SafetyWing's single $250,000 plan.

How we scored this: 2.9/5

We score every provider we review on the same five weighted criteria, built from the facts in our provider table. This isn't an average of customer reviews.

AURAS undercuts every provider we compare, which is what lifts its score. Pulling it down: a non-EU-regulated Comoros underwriter, the $3,000 per-event cap on every tier, claims that need prior consent above $1,000, broad exclusions, a visa-refusal add-on we could not confirm in the wording, and a certificate we have not been able to check. The price score is 5 on the same five-provider scale used on our other review pages, because AURAS undercuts all five of them.

Bottom line

AURAS is the cheapest way we have measured to get a Schengen-compliant policy, as long as you pick the 35,000 EUR plan and you are not counting on it for a large claim. The $3,000 per-event cap, the pre-approval rules, the non-EU underwriter and a 3.2 Trustpilot score are the price of that low rate. Check the comparison table against your exact age and dates, and read the certificate before you submit it.

Frequently asked questions

Is AURAS a legitimate Schengen visa insurance provider?
AURAS sells a real policy with an electronic certificate, and its euro-denominated €35,000 plan clears the €30,000 Article 15 minimum. But it is underwritten by a Comoros-registered company that is not EU-regulated (the same one behind EKTA), any single medical event is capped at $3,000 on every tier, and its independent Trustpilot score is 3.2/5. We have not verified its certificate wording against the consulate checklist, so read the PDF before you submit it.
How much does AURAS Schengen insurance cost?
A flat $1.50 per day on the entry plan for adults aged 18 to 65, at every trip length: $10.50 for 7 days, $21 for 14 days, $45 for 30 days and $135 for 90 days (measured live in AURAS's own calculator on 2 October 2026). Higher tiers cost $2, $3 and $5 per day. From age 66 a surcharge applies, and children pay more than adults.
Is AURAS the same company as EKTA?
Yes, at the insurer level. EKTA's policy wording is published by Auras Insurance LLC, the same Comoros-registered company that sells AURAS directly. They are two products with different policy documents, but they share the underwriter, the regulator (the Anjouan Offshore Finance Authority) and a $3,000 per-event sublimit.
Does AURAS refund me if my Schengen visa is refused?
AURAS advertises a refund on visa refusal through an optional add-on of about $49 that reimburses the embassy fee against an official refusal letter, not your insurance premium. We could not find a matching clause in the policy wording, so confirm the terms before relying on it. Without the add-on, cancelling after the first 14 days but before the trip starts costs a 40% administrative fee, and there is no refund once the policy has started.
Does AURAS cap what a single claim pays?
Yes. The policy sets a sublimit of USD 3,000 per insured person for any single covered event, on every tier. The 35k, 100k, 500k and 1M figures are whole-trip ceilings, not what one claim pays. Treatment expected to cost more than $1,000 also needs the insurer's written consent before it starts.
Is AURAS good for older travelers or children?
It insures both, but not cheaply. Our live quotes show the price rising from age 66 (about 1.2 times the adult rate, up to 1.6 times at 86), and children cost more than adults (about 1.6 to 1.8 times). The policy also excludes pre-existing and chronic conditions. Compare it with the senior-focused options in our seniors' guide before buying.
