Schengen visa insurance for families with children
What is the cheapest Schengen visa insurance for a family? For two adults aged 18 to 39 with two children under 10, SafetyWing comes out cheapest in our estimates because children under 10 travel free as dependents on a parent's plan (up to two per family). For adults aged 40 to 59, EKTA and AURAS are cheaper than SafetyWing, since SafetyWing's adult rate rises sharply with age. Every child needs their own certificate.
Insuring a family for a Schengen visa multiplies the cost, and how each insurer prices children matters more than the adult headline rate. SafetyWing's children-free rule changes the answer for a lot of families; for others it does not.
The visa side: every traveler needs a certificate
Children applying for a Schengen visa need their own insurance certificate with the same €30,000 minimum as adults, valid across all Schengen states and for the exact travel dates. Make sure each child is named on a certificate you can attach to their own application, including a child insured as a dependent. See what the certificate must show.
How each insurer treats children
| Provider | Children under 10 | Children 10 to 17 |
|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing | Free as a dependent on an insured parent's plan, up to 2 children per family | Full adult rate if buying their own policy |
| AURAS | Costs more than an adult: about 1.8 times the adult price at age 4 (live-measured) | About 1.6 times the adult price at ages 11 and 16 (live-measured) |
| AXA, Europ Assistance, Heymondo, EKTA | We have not verified live child prices for these; our model assumes roughly 10% below the adult rate, so treat family totals below as estimates | |
The SafetyWing rule is the standout: a third child in the same family pays, but two children under 10 cost nothing extra.
What a family trip costs
Estimated totals for two adults aged 18-39 and two children under 10:
| Trip | SafetyWing | EKTA (with partner discount) | AURAS | AXA | Heymondo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ~€27 | ~€37 | ~€48 | ~€83 | ~€74 |
| 14 days | ~€55 | ~€69 | ~€97 | ~€152 | ~€139 |
| 30 days | ~€117 | ~€134 | ~€207 | ~€238 | ~€268 |
If the two adults are 40-59, SafetyWing's adult rate is $3.67 to $5.76 per day against $2.24 for 18-39, and the ranking flips for short and medium trips:
| Trip | EKTA (with partner discount) | AURAS | SafetyWing | AXA |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 14 days | ~€73 | ~€97 | ~€115 | ~€152 |

What to watch for, beyond price
EKTA and AURAS limits. Both pay at most $3,000 for any single covered event whatever the headline cover, and they share one underwriter that is not EU-regulated. For children that cap matters more than the price gap, so read our EKTA review and AURAS review first.
SafetyWing's limits. Adults must be 69 or younger, there is no visa-refusal refund, and emergency treatment of pre-existing conditions is limited. Start the policy before departure and keep the dates exact.
Adults 60 and over. EKTA's medical cover drops to $10,000 or less from age 60, below the visa minimum, so it does not work for grandparents travelling with the family.
Refusal risk. If your visa could be refused, AXA is the one that refunds the premium on an official letter (conditions apply). Compare that with the saving elsewhere on our refusal-refund page.
Bottom line
Two adults under 40 with children under 10: check SafetyWing first. Older parents or kids 10 and over: price all of them, since the child advantage fades. Whatever you pick, buy one named certificate per traveler. Run your family through the estimator to see totals for your dates.
