AURAS vs SafetyWing: which Schengen visa insurance should you buy?

Quick answer

Is AURAS or SafetyWing cheaper for a Schengen visa? AURAS is cheaper at every age we compared: a flat $1.50 a day from 18 to 65, against SafetyWing's $2.24 at 18-39 rising to $7.82 at 60-69. But AURAS's smallest plan covers $35,000 of medical expenses and SafetyWing's covers $250,000. For the same $250,000 of medical cover, AURAS costs $5.00 a day, which is more than SafetyWing for travelers under 50 and less for those over 50. SafetyWing also has no deductible and a 4.3 Trustpilot score against AURAS's 3.2.

These two price very differently: AURAS is flat across adult ages, SafetyWing climbs steeply with age. Which one is cheaper depends on how old you are and how much cover you want.

Because both charge a flat daily rate, trip length scales the price evenly. A few examples calculated from those daily rates:

30 days, aged 30$45.00$67.20

Price for the same medical cover

The table above compares AURAS's smallest plan with SafetyWing's only plan, which are not the same level of cover. AURAS's tier with $250,000 of medical cover, the one marketed as 1,000,000, costs $5.00 a day for adults from 18 to 65. Against SafetyWing's $250,000 plan, that gives:

Traveler ageAURAS ($250,000 medical tier)SafetyWing ($250,000 plan)Cheaper
18 to 39$5.00$2.24SafetyWing
40 to 49$5.00$3.67SafetyWing
50 to 59$5.00$5.76AURAS
60 to 65$5.00$7.82AURAS
66 to 69About $6.00$7.82AURAS

So for a young adult who wants a large medical ceiling, SafetyWing is the cheaper way to get it. For travelers over 50, or anyone who only needs the certificate, AURAS is cheaper. Two cautions on the AURAS side: its policy caps any single event at USD 3,000, so the $250,000 is a trip ceiling and not what one claim pays; and the 66-to-69 figure assumes the age surcharge applies to every tier, which we measured only on the entry plan.

Age limits, children and refusal

Older travelers. SafetyWing stops at 69 and coverage ends the day the insured turns 70. AURAS sells beyond that, with a rising surcharge.

Children. SafetyWing covers a child under 10 free as a dependent on an insured parent's plan, up to two per family; a child aged 10 to 17 buying their own policy pays the adult rate. AURAS charges children more than adults (about 1.6 to 1.8 times in our quotes).

Visa refusal. SafetyWing has no visa-refusal refund. AURAS advertises an optional add-on of about $49 for the embassy fee, which we could not find in its wording.

Reviews. SafetyWing holds 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 4,042 reviews. AURAS holds 3.2 from 169 reviews, with claim-handling complaints.

Who each one is for

AURAS suits travelers over about 50, or any budget traveler who mainly needs the certificate, and anyone aged 70 or older, who cannot buy SafetyWing at all.

SafetyWing suits younger travelers who want a high medical ceiling and no deductible, travelers who value a strong review record, and families with a child under 10.

Bottom line

Pick by age and by how much you care about a large claim. Under 50 and wanting a big medical ceiling, SafetyWing is the better value and the better reviewed. Over 50, over 70, or watching every dollar for the visa file, AURAS is cheaper, with the $3,000 per-event cap and the pre-approval rules as the cost.
