Schengen visa insurance for digital nomads and remote workers

Quick answer

What is the best Schengen visa insurance for a digital nomad? It depends on how fixed your dates are. SafetyWing charges a flat daily rate for exactly the days you pick, with no deductible and no duration discount, which suits irregular, changing schedules. For a fixed 60 to 90-day Schengen stay it is not the cheapest: AXA, AURAS and EKTA all come out lower per our estimates. SafetyWing also does not cover you past age 69 and has no visa-refusal refund.

Remote workers rarely fit the standard visa-applicant mold: the dates move, the base changes, and the policy often has to follow you out of Europe too. Here is what a Schengen visa requires, where SafetyWing helps, and where its pricing works against you.

What the visa actually requires

For a short-stay Schengen visa (up to 90 days in any 180), the consulate wants a certificate showing at least €30,000 of medical cover, validity across all Schengen states, your exact travel dates, and repatriation. Being a remote worker changes none of that. The extra thing nomads care about is what happens after the visa: whether the same policy keeps covering you in other countries and whether you can match it to dates that keep shifting. See the full rules in what Schengen visa insurance must cover.

Where SafetyWing fits a nomad schedule

SafetyWing (Nomad Insurance Essential) is priced as a flat daily rate for the exact days you choose, with $250,000 of medical cover and no deductible (confirmed in the policy wording). Its verified rate for an 18-39 traveler is $2.24 per day, checked live at both 14 and 30 days, and it does not change with trip length. The certificate is an instant PDF from your account.

That structure matters when your plans are fluid. You are not committing to a bundle priced for a fixed trip length, and you pay for the days you actually need. Our full SafetyWing review covers the policy in more detail.

Where it costs more than the alternatives

The same flat daily rate that makes it flexible makes it expensive on a long fixed stay, because there is no duration discount, while AXA, EKTA and others get much cheaper per day the longer you stay. Estimated totals for one 18-39 traveler:

Trip lengthSafetyWingAXAAURASEKTA (with partner discount)
14 days~€27~€40~€18~€18
30 days~€59~€63~€38~€35
60 days~€117~€79~€77~€64
90 days~€176~€99~€115~€91

Source: estimates from the rate model behind our homepage calculator (index.html RATES), per traveler, before any promo except where stated; AXA calibrated on 8 live quotes (September 21, 2026), SafetyWing on its live $2.24/day rate (September 15, 2026), AURAS on its live $1.50/day (October 2, 2026). Always confirm the final price on the insurer's site.

So for 14 and 30 days, SafetyWing is competitive. At 60 and 90 days it is the most expensive of these four. Price rises sharply with age too: its verified daily rates are $2.24 (18-39), $3.67 (40-49), $5.76 (50-59) and $7.82 (60-69).

Limits a nomad should check before buying

Age ceiling of 69. SafetyWing is sold to 69; cover ends the day you turn 70, and no rate exists for 70 and over.

Your home country. It is not designed to cover you at home. Short visits are covered only up to 179 days in a 364-day period on annual payment, or 30 days in a 90-day period on other payment modes, and the US is limited further and excluded entirely without a paid add-on. A US citizen or resident can never use the US cover.

Pre-existing conditions. Emergency treatment is covered only if it is sudden and rapidly progressive, treated within 24 hours of onset, the policy has been active at least 28 days, and it is not chronic or congenital. Medical evacuation for a pre-existing condition is capped at $25,000 against $100,000 otherwise.

No visa-refusal refund. If the consulate refuses your visa, SafetyWing does not return the premium (confirmed in the policy wording), unlike AXA. Cancel before the start date for a full refund, and remember it is not EU-regulated: its regulator is in Puerto Rico. See the visa refusal refund comparison.

How to choose

Your situationWhat fits
Dates uncertain or likely to change, trip under about a monthSafetyWing: pay a flat daily rate for the exact days
Fixed stay of 60 to 90 days, age 18 to 59AURAS or EKTA are cheaper; AXA if you want the most-verified certificate
You also need cover outside Europe for the same policyCheck each policy's geography; AXA Essential adds the UK, Ireland and Cyprus, and SafetyWing has its own country limits above
Age 70 or overNot SafetyWing; AXA sells at a higher age-adjusted rate, and EKTA's cover drops below the visa minimum from 60

Bottom line

SafetyWing is the right call when flexibility matters more than the lowest total, and a poor one for a long fixed stay. If you are unsure, run your exact dates through the estimator before deciding. For longer plans see long-stay Schengen insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is SafetyWing accepted for a Schengen visa?
SafetyWing issues a certificate with $250,000 of medical cover, which is above the €30,000 minimum, and it can be downloaded instantly. As with any provider, check the certificate shows all Schengen states, your exact dates and repatriation before you submit it. It has no special consulate-verification claim.
Is SafetyWing cheaper than AXA for a 90-day stay?
No. Our estimates put SafetyWing at about €176 for 90 days (18-39), against about €99 for AXA, because SafetyWing charges a flat daily rate with no duration discount while AXA's per-day price falls sharply on long stays.
Can I use SafetyWing in my home country?
Only for limited visits. Cover for your home country applies up to 179 days in a 364-day period on annual payment, or 30 days in a 90-day period on other payment modes, and the US is further restricted. It is not meant as primary cover at home.
Does SafetyWing refund the premium if my visa is refused?
No. Its policy has no visa-refusal refund. You can cancel for a full refund only before the start date. If that risk matters, compare it with AXA, which refunds the premium on an official refusal letter under conditions.
What is the maximum age for SafetyWing?
It is sold up to age 69, and cover ends the day you turn 70. There is no rate for travelers aged 70 and over.
