AXA vs AURAS: which Schengen visa insurance should you buy?
Is AXA Schengen or AURAS cheaper for a Schengen visa? AURAS, on short and medium trips: it charges a flat $1.50 a day, while AXA starts at €4.90 a day and falls steeply on long stays. On our model: 18-39: AURAS is cheaper up to 60 days, AXA from 90 days; 60-69: AURAS is cheaper up to 60 days, AXA from 90 days; 70+: AURAS is cheaper up to 30 days, AXA from 60 days. What AXA gives you for the difference is an EU-regulated insurer, a certificate consulates can verify online, a full premium refund on a documented visa refusal, and no $3,000 cap on a single claim that we know of.
These sit at opposite ends of the market. AXA is the name consulates see most and the priciest per day on a short trip; AURAS is the cheapest flat rate we track, from a Comoros underwriter. The honest comparison is what the price gap buys.

Age limits, refusal and reviews
Visa refusal. AXA states that it refunds the premium against an official refusal letter if you ask before your cover starts and have made no claim (from its own refund page, checked October 3, 2026; we have not read that term in a policy wording). AURAS offers an optional add-on of about $49 that reimburses the embassy fee, not the premium, and we could not find it in its wording.
Older travelers. AXA sells to travelers over 70 at a higher age-adjusted rate, with no confirmed upper cutoff. AURAS sells beyond 70 too, with a surcharge from age 66 (about 1.2 times at 66, 1.6 times at 86).
Reviews. AXA holds 3.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 1,831 reviews; AURAS holds 3.2 from 169. Neither is strong, and AURAS reviewers cite denied and slow claims and the 48-hour notice rule.

Who each one is for
AXA suits first-time applicants who want the least room for doubt at the consulate, anyone who values a premium refund on refusal, and longer trips of about 90 days where its steep long-stay discount closes the gap.
AURAS suits a budget traveler on a trip of up to about two months who mainly needs the certificate, and who accepts a non-EU underwriter, a $3,000 per-event cap and pre-approval rules for treatment over $1,000.
Bottom line
If a refusal or a certificate question would wreck fixed plans, AXA's recognition and premium refund are what the extra money buys. If you are watching every euro on a short trip and the risk of a large claim is low, AURAS is the cheaper certificate, with its claim cap and approval rules as the price.
