Annual and multi-trip Schengen insurance: what exists
Is there annual or multi-trip Schengen insurance? Partly. Europ Assistance sells one policy that can last up to 365 days and cover several trips of up to 4 months each. SafetyWing sells renewable 5 to 364-day periods. For AXA, Heymondo, EKTA and AURAS we could not confirm multi-trip cover from the documents we have, so ask before assuming it.
Most Schengen visa plans are priced and issued per trip. If you travel to Europe several times a year, the question is whether one policy can cover them all. This page shows what the wordings actually say.
What each provider allows
| Provider | Multi-trip or long-period cover |
|---|---|
| Europ Assistance | Yes: one policy for multiple trips, 1 to 365 days, each trip up to 4 months. Not renewable and cannot be extended. Cover starts when you leave your country of residence and enter the covered territory |
| SafetyWing | Renewable periods of 5 to 364 days, renewable until age 70. Annual (364-day) payments exist, with a $60 fee and a non-refundable 35% if you cancel after the start date. Home-country visits are covered only briefly |
| Heymondo | Not confirmed in the general conditions we hold. Medical expenses are paid for up to 180 days from the event. Sold only to age 69 |
| EKTA | Not confirmed in the policy wording we hold |
| AURAS | Not confirmed. Flat per-day price with no duration discount |
| AXA Schengen | Not verified: we have no AXA policy wording |

Do you need it for a multiple-entry visa?
Not at the application stage. For a multiple-entry visa the consulate asks for proof of insurance covering your first intended trip and a declaration that you will be insured on later ones. We explain the rule in the requirements guide and in our multiple-entry visa article.
When one long policy makes sense, and when it does not
- It can make sense if you spend many separate periods in Europe and a provider like Europ Assistance lets one policy cover them within the same 365 days.
- It may not save money where the price is flat per day. SafetyWing and AURAS charge the same rate for every day, so a 364-day plan costs roughly 364 times the daily rate even if you only travel for 60 of those days.
- Check the territory and your home country: SafetyWing covers home-country visits only for limited periods, and it is not valid in the US without an add-on.
- Watch the age cutoff: SafetyWing stops renewing at 70 and Heymondo ends cover on the 70th birthday.
A simple way to compare
Add up the actual days you will spend in the Schengen area across the year, price those at the per-trip rate on our price estimator, and compare with the long-period policy's total. See our cost guide for how duration affects each provider.
