Does Schengen travel insurance cover skiing and adventure sports?

Short answer: ordinary leisure such as hiking, cycling or swimming is usually fine, but skiing and adventure sports are where the providers split. Europ Assistance excludes winter sport, Heymondo names skiing in its exclusions, and SafetyWing covers skiing on marked slopes only.

The Schengen visa rule does not ask about sports. Article 15 of the EU Visa Code requires €30,000 of cover for emergency medical care, urgent hospital treatment and repatriation, and the sports rules live in the policy wording. See our requirements guide.

What each provider's wording says

Europ Assistance (Schengen and Schengen Plus): excludes the consequences of winter sport, competitive sport and motorsports, and of boxing, martial arts, mountaineering with access to glaciers, sledging, diving with breathing apparatus, caving and airborne sports. Adventure sports such as rafting, bungee jumping, hydrospeed and gorge walking are excluded too, and so is mountain, cave, sea or desert rescue.

Heymondo: a list of activities is included by default if they are not the reason for the trip and are not competitive, including general hiking, trekking below 3,000 meters, cycling, kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, snowshoeing, zip-lining and sledding in ski resorts. An optional Adventure Sports supplement adds items such as canyoning, rafting, diving under 20 meters, mountain biking and trekking up to 5,000 meters. The general exclusions name skiing, heli-skiing, off-piste skiing, scuba diving, mountaineering and martial arts, with an exception only if you buy the Adventure Sports supplement, and the activities we read in the supplement list do not include skiing, so confirm with Heymondo before relying on it for a ski trip. Heymondo is not sold past age 69.

SafetyWing: skiing and snowboarding are covered, but not off-piste or against the advice of the local ski school. Heli-skiing is not covered even with the Adventure sports add-on. Scuba diving needs a recognized certification, hiking is covered only on official paths, rock climbing is not covered when solo, and any activity at 4,500 meters or higher needs the add-on. Professional or competitive sport is excluded. SafetyWing is not sold past age 69.

EKTA: the policy offers an optional Sport and Extreme Leisure add-on. The Start program also excludes any claim involving alcohol, which matters after a ski accident.

AURAS: an appendix groups activities into calm leisure and cruise, active leisure and professional or extreme sport. Active leisure includes alpine skiing and snowboarding on specially equipped or marked tracks and trekking up to 3,000 meters. Check whether that level needs the optional sport add-on, since sport and extreme activities are listed as an add-on.

AXA Schengen: we have no policy wording for AXA, so ask AXA in writing.

What this means for a ski trip in the Alps

If skiing is the point of the trip, the plan you buy for the visa may not cover it. Europ Assistance excludes it outright, and Heymondo's wording is unclear enough to ask about. SafetyWing and AURAS name on-piste skiing, with conditions. Whatever you choose, ask the insurer in writing, because off-piste, heli-skiing and competition are excluded almost everywhere, and rescue costs are a separate line in several policies.

Compare the options in the provider comparison, and see what Schengen insurance covers for the per-event caps that apply on EKTA and AURAS.

This information is general comparison guidance, not insurance advice. Coverage details and prices are set by the insurers and may change; verify the policy wording on the insurer's official website before purchasing.
