Does Schengen Travel Insurance Cover Pregnancy?
Short answer: routine pregnancy care is excluded by every provider we compare, and only some cover an emergency complication, each with a different cutoff week. The cutoffs run from 16 weeks to 27 weeks, so the provider matters more than the plan.
The Schengen visa itself does not ask about pregnancy. Article 15 of the EU Visa Code requires medical cover of at least €30,000, valid across all Schengen states for the whole stay, including repatriation. The detail that matters is inside the policy wording. Our Schengen insurance requirements guide explains what a consulate checks.
What each provider's wording says
Europ Assistance (Schengen and Schengen Plus): diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of pregnancy beyond 16 weeks, including childbirth and care of the newborn, is not covered. Before 16 weeks, only the diagnosis of pregnancy and emergency treatment are covered, and voluntary termination is excluded.
SafetyWing: costs related to pregnancy or childbirth are excluded, except complications. It covers ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, hyperemesis gravidarum, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, missed miscarriage and conditions of comparable severity, if the incident happens during the first 26 weeks, up to the overall limit. SafetyWing is not sold past age 69.
EKTA: pregnancy complications up to 27 weeks are covered on the Gold and Max+ programs, and the Start program does not include them. Emergency gynecological care up to 27 weeks is limited to $5,000, with at most 5 inpatient days or 5 specialist appointments, and a medical certificate must confirm the pregnancy. Scheduled care, childbirth and complications after 27 weeks are excluded. EKTA also caps any single event at $3,000, so check how that cap applies.
AURAS: complications of pregnancy up to 27 weeks and emergency gynecological care up to 27 weeks (at most 5 inpatient days or 5 specialist appointments) are covered. Scheduled consultations, exams and tests during pregnancy, complications after 27 weeks, obstetric care and childbirth are excluded, and so is abortion except an urgent termination for medical reasons. AURAS also caps any single event at $3,000.
Heymondo: the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of pregnancy, voluntary termination and childbirth are excluded from its medical cover. Heymondo is not sold past age 69.
AXA Schengen: we have no policy wording for AXA, so we cannot say. Ask AXA in writing before buying.
What this means in practice
For a pregnant traveler, the earliest cutoff in the table decides the plan: Europ Assistance stops covering pregnancy at 16 weeks, SafetyWing at 26 weeks and EKTA or AURAS at 27 weeks. Check the cutoff against the week of pregnancy at the end of your trip, not at the start. A higher headline limit does not change this, because the exclusion wording decides whether the claim is paid at all.
Also read our guide to pre-existing conditions, because a known pregnancy is usually treated as one. The provider comparison shows medical limits side by side, and the price estimator gives a cost range for your trip.
This information is general comparison guidance, not insurance advice. Coverage details and prices are set by the insurers and may change; verify the policy wording on the insurer's official website before purchasing.
